This one's special so I'm just going to say...
Here's looking at you kid :) For the next 100 years or so :)
I love old movies. That's not a secret. :)
One of the main reasons I love old movies is because of the music. There's nothing like a song sung that perfectly suits the mood of the moment and that actually accentuates the emotion that is being depicted in the scene. (Unlike our movies where a song most often pops up out of the blue and takes the actors to foreign countries and has 40 random people doing weird steps behind them. But lets not go into that.) :)
Here are some of my absolute favourite love songs from old movies.
1st Song - The Way You Look Tonight #TheMJshow
I know I've featured it once before, but it is one of the greatest love songs in a movie. Here's Fred Astaire singing it for Ginger Rogers in the 1936 musical "Swing Time"
The song was written by Jerome Kern with lyrics by Dorothy Fields
2nd Song -I've Grown Accustomed To Her Face #TheMJshow
I remember seeing Rex Harrison almost speaking out this song in "My Fair Lady" (1964) as he remembers Audrey Hepburn. I love the moment, the way he says it, the realization he faces...the love! It's wonderful!
The song has music by Frederick Loewe and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner.
3rd Song - They Can't Take That Away From Me #TheMJshow
Fred Astaire sings the song to Ginger Rogers in the 1937 classic "Shall We Dance". The song was written by the great George Gershwin and Ira Gershwin and what a song it is!
4th Song - For Me And My Gal #TheMJshow
Gene Kelly and Judy Garland!! What a lovely song and that Judy!! She sings so sweet! :) And ol'Gene...what a charmer eh? :) The boy sure could dance! :D
This was Gene Kelly's debut film, a film that was also called "For Me And My Gal". (1942)
Music and lyrics by George W. Meyer, Edgar Leslie and E. Ray Goetz.
5th Song - I Wanna Be Loved By You #TheMJshow
From the 1959 comedy "Some Like It Hot", directed by Billy Wilder here's a song that'll make any red blooded man melt. Marilyn Monroe croons it in her inimitable style and man...look at her...she's hot! :)
The film also featured Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis. The song was written by Herbert Stothart and Harry Ruby, with lyrics by Bert Kalmar.
6th Song - Cheek To Cheek #TheMJshow
Here's another song featuring the greatest dancing couple of Hollywood Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers! From the 1935 classic "Top Hat" here it is...a song written by Irving Berlin. Here is...Cheek To Cheek.
7th Song - You And Your Beautiful Eyes #TheMJshow
The coolest voice in the history of the musicals, that's what ol' Dino had :)
Here's Dean Martin and Polly Bergen singing this lovely song in the 1950 comedy that featured the fab team of Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis!
Lovely! :)
8th Song - True Love #TheMJshow
I have to tell you. Bing Crosby, Dean Martin, Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra and Elvis are my 5 biggest influences.
What a voice this man had! Incredible.
Watch him here with Grace Kelly. The movie was "High Society" and it starred Bing, Grace and Frank Sinatra too! The song I have for you from the film was written by Cole Porter.
9th Song - When The Girl In Your Arms Is The Girl In Your Heart #TheMJshow
Cliff Richard didn't make too many movies but the few he made had some really lovely songs...like the one I have for you here. This song was in the 1961 hit film "The Young Ones".
The song was written by the songwriting team of Sid Tepper and Roy Bennett.
10th Song - Wooden Heart #TheMJshow
Elvis! Elvis! Elvis!
The only way to end this show was with a song by Elvis.
From his 1960 film, G.I.Blues that starred him and Juilet Prowse, here's one of the most adorable love songs ever.
The song was created by Fred Wise, Ben Weisman, Kay Twomey and German bandleader Bert Kaempfert, was based on a German folk song, "Muß i' denn zum Städtele hinaus".
This one's for Neha :) This song kinda started things off didn't it? :)
That's it for tonight true believers! :)
I love these songs and I promise more standards and oldies soon...but I have a feeling that the next one's going to have something to do with rock music :)
This is your Musicman Mihir and I'll see you again soon...
There's something magical when two great singers get together and sing a song of love. Here are some of my favourite duets. Hope you like em. They are love songs from all sorts of genres.
1st Song - Aaron Neville and Linda Ronstadt - Don't Know Much #TheMJshow
Such an incredibly beautiful song. Don't know much...but I do know that this, this here is a great song!
2nd Song - Dolly Parton and Vince Gill - I Will Always Love You #TheMJshow
You thought Whitney Houston did this song well...well, have a look at this. The song was originally written by Dolly Parton in any case.
3rd Song - Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes - I've Had the Time of My Life #TheMJshow
Does this song need any introduction at all? :)
4th Song -Ville Valo and Natalia Avalon - Summer Wine #TheMJshow
I LOVE this song. Ville Valo has the most incredible voice that you can imagine and Natalia Avalon sounds magical!
Boys :) I have a feeling you'll really love this video...a LOT :) DO NOT MISS seeing this :) ;)
Boy! This is fun. Never got to show you videos while I was on radio. This is a LOT of fun :)
5th Song - Roy Orbison and K.D.Lang - Crying #TheMJshow
What a song! Roy Orbison's voice has more feeling in this song than anything I've heard before. And when K.D.Lang's effortless vocals join his...its what I said at the very start of this episode...pure magic!
6th Song -Ray Charles and Diana Krall - You Don't Know Me #TheMJshow
Actually, his entire album "Genius Loves Company" is ...genius. Pure, unadulterated genius.
This is just one song from that glorious collection that I love.
7th Song - Dean Martin and Martina McBride - Baby It's Cold Outside #TheMJshow
This is a song I love listening to when its cold...and when its not. I just love this song. Its a standard and has been sung by pretty much every BIG name in the business...but no one does it like ol Dino :)
8th Song - Clint Black and Lisa Hartman Black - When I Said I Do #TheMJshow
One of the most beautiful songs lyrically. It talks about the love that a husband feels for his wife, years after being together. Lovely :) This is dedicated to all your husbands and wives still madly in love with each other :)
9th Song -Kid Rock and Shery Crow - Picture #TheMJshow
Okay okay...its not the quintessential love song...but hey, love ain't all flowers and rainbows. Sometimes the sad part is also being in love. Here's a song that's a little bit more about the bluesy part of love than the sunshine and rainbows.
10th Song -Huey Lewis and Gwenyth Paltrow - Cruisin' #TheMJshow
Again, a slightly odd song choice maybe...but what a song! Check out the harmonies on this. Huey Lewis is grand! And who knew that Gwenyth Paltrow could sing like this! Wow! :)
This is just the first of many duets specials I want to do. Hope you liked tonight's song choice.
