The MJ Show #39 (Rod Stewart - One Night Only)

One of my favourite singers of all time has always been Rod Stewart.
I think he has one of the most distinctive voices I've ever heard and it's absolute magic when he sings. Women love him and men would love to be him! :)
I think what I love most is that he connects straight to my heart. It's soul music...and ironically enough his latest album, an album I've gone on and on about for quite a while now on twitter, is called Soulbook.
While I was browsing through for some random stuff on youtube, I chanced upon this brilliant documentary/concert of Rod Stewart.
It was called "One Night Only" and it was broadcast on 5th Dec 2009 on ITV1 in the UK.
The documentary takes you into the life of Rod Stewart and tells you a little more about the man and his music and the concert footage...well that's what it's all about isn't it? :)
Brilliant songs, from his new album and a few big hits from the past as well are what you can see in this documentary/concert.

I won't tell you much about the songs...just a few facts...but you can completely ignore me and just listen to the man. I'm giving you just 8 songs tonight. Don't miss a single clip! Okay? Promise? :)
Okay...here we go!

Rod Stewart recorded it as a track for the album "Never A Dull Moment" and released it as a single on 12 August 1972. The song became popular internationally and placed high on many countries' national charts, reaching number one on the UK Singles Chart and number thirteen on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
1st Song - Rod Stewart - You Wear It Well #TheMJshow

"It's The Same Old Song" is a 1965 hit single recorded by The Four Tops for the Motown label. Written and produced by Motown's main production team Holland-Dozier-Holland, the song is today one of The Tops' signature songs, and was notably created—from initial concept to commercial release—in 24 hours.
"(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher" was a classic R&B hit for Jackie Wilson way back in 1967!
Both songs have been covered by many people and Rod covered both of these in his last album "Soulbook".
2nd Song - Rod Stewart - It's The Same Old Song - (Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher And Higher #TheMJshow

"Handbags and Gladrags" is the name of a song written in 1967 by Mike d'Abo, who was then the lead singer of Manfred Mann. d'Abo describes the song as "saying to a teenage girl that the way to happiness is not being trendy. There are deeper values"
In 1969, Rod Stewart recorded a version for the 1970 album An Old Raincoat Won't Ever Let You Down. This version of the song was arranged by Mike d'Abo himself, who also played piano on the recording.
In 2001, Stereophonics released a version of the song on a single, due to its popularity it was added to their album Just Enough Education to Perform as track 7.
Here you see a brilliant performance of the song featuring both Rod Stewart and the Stereophonics!
3rd Song - Rod Stewart & Stereophonics - Handbags & Gladrags #TheMJshow

"Love Train" is a song by Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff that was a hit record for The O'Jays. Released in 1973, it reached number one on both the R&B Singles and the Billboard Hot 100 charts and was certified gold by the RIAA. It was The O'Jays' first and only number-one record on the U.S. pop chart. The song's lyrics of unity mention a number of countries, including England, Russia, China, Egypt and Israel, as well as the continent of Africa.
Rod covered this song on Soulbook as well and check out what he does with it!
4th Song - Rod Stewart - Love Train #TheMJshow

"I Don't Want to Talk About It" is the name of a song written by Danny Whitten. Whitten's band, Crazy Horse released it as a track on their 1971 eponymous album.
In 1975, Rod Stewart recorded the song at Muscle Shoals Sound Studio in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, for his album Atlantic Crossing. This became successful when it was released as a single. In the United States, it became a top fifty hit on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1979. In the United Kingdom, it topped the UK Singles Chart as a double A-side with "The First Cut Is the Deepest" in 1977.
5th Song - Rod Stewart - I Don't Want To Talk About It #TheMJshow

"Rainy Night in Georgia" is a song written by Tony Joe White in 1962 and popularized by R&B vocalist Brook Benton in 1970.
Rod did this incredible song in Soulbook as well. Just one of the many reasons to pick up that album!
6th Song - Rod Stewart - Rainy Night In Georgia #TheMJshow

Coming up is possibly my favourite jazz standard of all time. If there's one song I wish to sing live before I die, it is this one!
"The Way You Look Tonight" is a song featured in the film Swing Time, originally performed by Fred Astaire. It won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1936. The song was written by Jerome Kern with lyrics by Dorothy Fields.
This is a song that has been covered by many many artists and Rod Stewart joined that list when he did this song for his superhit album "It Had to Be You: The Great American Songbook"
Stunning album that one by the way. I highly recommend it to you all.
He released 3 more albums of jazz standards after this one and each of them was a massive hit. Pick em all up!
7th Song - Rod Stewart - The Way You Look Tonight #TheMJshow

And finally, here comes the last song of his set that night. Coming up is his MASSIVE hit "Maggie May"!
"Maggie May" is a song written by singer Rod Stewart and Martin Quittenton and recorded by Stewart in 1971 for his album Every Picture Tells a Story.
"Maggie May" expresses the ambivalence and contradictory emotions of a young man involved in a relationship with an older woman, and was written from Stewart's own experience.
In October 1971, the song went to number one in the UK and simultaneously topped the charts in the United States. Every Picture Tells a Story achieved the same status at the same time, a feat achieved by only a handful of performers, most notably The Beatles and Simon and Garfunkel. The song was Stewart's first substantial hit as a solo performer and launched his solo career. It remains one of his best-known songs.
What a way to end this show! :)
8th Song - Rod Stewart - Maggie May #TheMJshow

Right then, I hope I've just whetted your appetite for Rod Stewart's music. Go pick up some of his albums. You won't regret it.

I recommend picking up the following.
It Had To Be You: The Great American Songbook
As Time Goes By: The Great American Songbook 2
Stardust: The Great American Songbook 3
Thanks For The Memory: The Great American Songbook 4
Still The Same... Great Rock Classics Of Our Time
Soulbook
and
If We Fall In Love Tonight
The Story So Far - The Very Best Of Rod Stewart

Also recommend the dvd of "Rod Stewart - One Night Only - Live at the Royal Albert Hall". That is not this documentary. It is a dvd with him performing songs from the Great American Songbook. Totally worth it!

Hoy!! Here's the part I know you all LOVE.
Here's a chance to win Rod's new album "Soulbook" courtesy Sony Music India once again.
(The Kings Of Leon cds were also thanks to those guys :) Give them a mental round of applause please for supporting the show!)

3 simple questions again and this time I'll base them on the songs from the album.
1. Who does Rod sing "My Cherie Amour" with in this album?
2. "Tracks Of My Tears" was originally a hit for which Motown great?
3. The stunning song "Let It Be Me" is a duet that Rod sings with which fabulous female singer?
(Pssst. Two ways of getting these answers. Look em up on Amazon and Wikipedia or...listen to the whole album! ;) )

Right then. Protocol is same as last time.
Write "The MJ Show - Rod Stewart Contest" in your subject, write out your answers and send them to musicmanmihir@gmail.com
Okay?
Right then! Get going!!

That's all I got for you tonight. I've got a BIG show coming up over the weekend! With a contest to go with is as well.

Right then, it's time for me to say...take care...and good night! :)

The MJ Show #37 (Guests Series - Miss Malini's Top 10 Songs)

The guest series continues tonight with a person who is no stranger to being on a radio show. In fact, she has been on radio for a really really long time and is currently hosting the brilliant "Pirate Radio" show on Radio One. This is apart from a host of other things that she also does! She's a really nice person and you can't help but smile when you hear her talk on air or have the pleasure of hanging out with her.
I have had the pleasure when I spent a few months hosting a show right after her's on Radio One. That's right, I'm talking about one of the most active and fun people on the internet, the awesome...Malini Agarwal...or as you better know her...Miss Malini!

Oh yeah, she was also the first person to pick the winners for a contest on The MJ Show here. The winners of the Kings Of Leon cds...were picked by her! So @bonda0123, @MMMMeenal and @BIRAJADEO, the three winners of that contest...you know who to thank right?
Miss Malini for picking your number, Sony Music India for giving the cds for that contest, the Kings Of Leon for that brilliant album...and #TheMJshow :)

So...I told her...I would love to have your top 10 songs in the Guest Series and she said that after shortlisting a WHOLE lotta songs, she couldn't cut the list any shorter. So here it is...her top ten plus four bonus songs! :)
Technically her top 14 :) but I just want to put it that way :) Chalega na?
    Okay...so here we go!

1st Song - Three Doors Down - Here Without You #TheMJshow
Malini Agarwal: I rediscovered this song thanks to a Twitter request on my radio show. Its got such heart-wrenching loneliness in its vocals and even though I cannot sing I can't help but sing out loud to the chorus "I'm here without you baby, but you're still on my lonely mind, I think about you baby, and I dream about you all the time..." This may have something to do with being in a 2 year long-distance relationship! (But fear not I'm now on the home stretch!)
Mihir Joshi: And it's going to an awesome time for you I'm sure. Great song choice as well to kick things off. :) Here it is...just for you and the lucky man in your life.
God damn! You waited two years for him eh!! What more could a guy want!

    2nd song - Lilly Allen - The Fear #TheMJshow
MA: I'm very impressed with Lilly Allen's sense of humor and exquisite irony. This song is about so much of the life I see in my line of work, plastic people in the Emerald city trying so hard to be perfect all the time... it must be so exhausting! But lets admit it, its also fun and everybody wants to be famous, even me.
MJ: :) Amen to that sister! :)
Okay, here's a lovely live version of the song for you.

3rd Song - Red Hot Chili Peppers - Zephyr Song #TheMJshow
MA: This is my freedom song and of course everyone knows The Red Hot Chili Peppers absolutely rock. I love how the lyrics tumble off your tongue and I like to hear this song with the windows down and a cool breeze blowing sunshine on my face!
MJ: RHCP ROCK! :) Very nice picture painted here for your fans btw. I'm sure they can almost see you in that car. :)
Another live version for you all tonight. Here we go!

4th Song - Go West - King of Wishful Thinking #TheMJshow
MA: Apart from the Pretty Woman connection (one of those movies you can watch over and over again) something about this song has always kept it fresh for me. I love the raspy vocals and the bitter-sweetness of heartbreak which sucks but also makes you feel the most alive! (Yup I'm a mush-pot, are you really that surprised?!)
MJ: Nope. Not surprised at all...and I think it's fab! I'm pretty mushy too :) 'Tis all good! :)
Okay, what I got for you is a remix of the song. Like?

    5th Song - The Fray - How To Save A Life #TheMJshow
MA: This song is for everyone who's ever felt utterly hopeless and I think I read a story about a guy who was on his way to kill himself over just that feeling when he heard this song on the radio and changed his mind. Still gives me chills, thank you for the music - music keeps us alive (sometimes quite literally.)
MJ: Wow! That's quite a story. Thank God for the music...and thank God for radio!!
    What a story!!
Hmmmm...one of the reasons I always remember the song is how beautifully it was used in all the Grey's Anatomy promos. So here it is...a video that kinda shows you what I'm talking about.

    6th Song - Cake - Love You Madly #TheMJshow
MA: I've discovered a lot of fabulous music thanks to my guests on Pirate Radio, this is one of those songs that appeared on Steve, Juhi & Sean's playlist (I think Juhi is in madly in love with this song) and now so am I :)
MJ: I'm discovering a LOT of fabulous music thanks to my guests right here! :) This song for instance is one of them :) Listening to it right now with you. Really interesting!

    7th Song - Maroon 5 - She Will Be Loved #TheMjshow
MA: I got into Maroon 5 when I was going through some pretty heavy-duty relationship angst. I loved every song on the album Songs About Jane but this one in particular. Its nice to know that there is someone out there who wouldn't mind spending everyday outside your corner in the pouring rain :)
    MJ: :) 'Nuff said! :)

    8th Song - Lighthouse Family - High #TheMJshow
MA: I've always loved this song especially the opening lyrics, this and the one by Five for Fighting - Superman (it's not easy) have the same vibe and this one in particular has so much hope. (I also love it even more since Imran Khan told me his girlfriend (now fiancee) Avantika and her friends blast it in his car on a regular basis!)
MJ: :) Okay then...this one goes out for Imran and Avatika from you? :)
Btw, Imran...MASSIVE congratulations on the engagement man. This one's for the two of you from me too :)

Bonus Song - Five For Fighting - Superman #TheMJshow
MJ: Why? Just because she mentioned it...and because I LOVE it too! :)
And I LOVE the video I've found for the song. Check it out!

MJ: Incidentally, for those of you who may not know...the tag "Musicman" I chose for myself when I started radio about 6 years ago was something that I chose as a tribute to two things I love - Music and Superman :) Hence - MusicMan :)
If you're curious about why I love Superman so much read this: Superman
This was a blogpost on this very site that I wrote many many months ago :)
Right then, back to the show...and to Malini's songs :)

    9th Song - Beyonce - Irreplaceable #TheMJshow
MA: Good riddance to anyone who doesn't know your worth. To the left baby to the left!
MJ: Beyonce makes it on The MJ Show...and she has you to thank for :D HAHAHA :D
I don't know what it is. Maybe it's a guy - gal thing...but I never got into Beyonce. Full power to her though. And as I'm listening to this song, I'm realizing that maybe it's just a mental thing. Really nice song. But yes, this is the FIRST Beyonce song here :) and it's all thanks to you!

10th Song - George Michael - Heal The Pain #TheMJshow
MA: This is how I like to remember George Michael, when he was a regular guy - the sweet uncomplicated kind. I always listen to this when I feel blue it makes me feel better :)
MJ: I agree with you. Old school George Michael was awesome! I think he had/has one of the greatest voices in rock n roll music. Incredible stuff...and great song Malini.

Bonus Song - Queen + George Michael - Somebody To Love #TheMJshow
MJ: This song shows you just why I think George Michael has one of the greatest voices in rock n roll history.
To take on a Queen song like this one and to do it so brilliantly...you can't be just good or ok...you've GOT TO be BRILLIANT! And that's what I think George was!

MJ: This concert reminds me...I've GOT to give you this concert as a special show guys and girls. MIND BLOWING stuff in this one! :)

    11th Song - Bree Sharp - David Duchovny #TheMJshow
MA: Another gem I discovered on pirate radio courtesy Imran Khan! Absolutely hilarious and actually a fairly accurate description of what having a mad crush can do to you! (Especially when he's famous and used to the screaming fans and you want to be his someone special... do I speak from experience? Does it show?!)
    MJ: :) Hahaha :)

    12th Song - Simply Red - Stars #TheMJshow
MA: Simply my favorite Simply Red song. Its awesome.
MJ: Beautiful song indeed. Let's listen to it now. :)

13th Song - Peter Gabriel - In Your Eyes #TheMJshow
MA: I'd heard this song before but never made the connection to the movie "Say Anything". I also totally love John Cusack so that helps! Its a song about incredible love, so incredible song.
MJ: Stunning song! Thanks for this one Malini. Hadn't heard it before. We're just proving what you said a while ago. Listening to new songs thanks to guest = #Epicwin ;)
(How long can you be safe from twitterspeak? It will get you! Eventually you WILL be converted!)

14th Song - General Elektriks - Raid the Radio #TheMJshow
MA: This is my current favorite song. Every once in a while I find a new song I get obsessed with (most recently, Impossible by Daniel Merriweather and We Are Golden by Mika) this is the latest in that series. Someone posted the video on my Facebook fanpage and the video is awesome too! I like to think this is what we do with Pirate Radio!
MJ: Full fun! Awesome song Malini. Totally digging it! :)

And because Malini likes em...here are two bonus songs pour toi! :)
Bonus Song - Daniel Merriweather - Impossible #TheMJshow

MJ: I love this next song. Brilliant song by Mika. :) What a video eh!?
For trivia fans...The video for this song was directed by Jonas Ã…kerlund
He first found fame as main video director for Swedish pop act Roxette. In 1998 he worked with Madonna for the song "Ray of Light", he has since worked with superstars such as Metallica, Christina Aguilera, U2, Satyricon, Blink-182 and Pink.
He has become a long collaborator of Madonna having worked on such music videos as "American Life", which was pulled due to its graphic content and the Iraq war, and "Jump".

Bonus Song - Mika - We Are Golden #TheMJshow

And that's about it for tonight!
Thank you so much Malini for these awesome songs :)
Hope you guys liked the songs. Do let Malini and me know what you felt right here in the comments and on twitter.
I'm sure you follow Malini on twitter but if you don't she can be found here: MissMalini

The MJ Show #36 (Brad Paisley)

'Twas about time that I did a special on a country artist. And of all of the current guys who're rocking the country world if I had to choose one guy to kick things off with, I guess it'd have to be Brad Paisley!
Not only is he a brilliant singer and songwriter but like another man whose music I love, he is also a KILLER guitar player.
Don't believe me...never heard of him...well, then let tonight's show open your eyes to one of the most incredible country music stars around.
So here we go...tonight I'm going to take you through the brilliant discography of BRAD PAISLEY!

    Album #1 - Who Needs Pictures (1999)
He kicked things off with a hit album which had some brilliant singles, two of which even made it to the #1 spot on the Billboard Country Music Charts.
Here are some of the best songs from the album.

    1st Song - Brad Paisley - Me Neither #TheMJshow

    2nd Song - Brad Paisley - We Danced #TheMJshow

    3rd Song - Brad Paisley - He Didn't Have To Be #TheMJshow

    4th Song - Brad Paisley - I've Been Better #TheMJshow

    Album #2 - Part II (2001)
This went on to be his second Platinum certified album and once again, it had some massive hits for him. Check out these songs...

5th Song - Brad Paisley - Two People Fell In Love #TheMJshow

    8th Song - Brad Paisley - Too Country #TheMJshow

Album #3 - Mud On The Tires (2003)
Possibly my favourite Brad Paisley album...and it is that just because of the incredible songs and guitar playing he's packed into this one.
Released in 2003, it produced four hit singles on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks charts: the Top Five hits "Celebrity", "Little Moments" and "Whiskey Lullaby", as well as the Number One title track. The album itself has been certified 2× Multi-Platinum by the RIAA, while "Whiskey Lullaby" and the title-track have been certified as gold singles.

9th Song - Brad Paisley - Mud On The Tires #TheMJshow

    10th Song - Brad Paisley - Celebrity #TheMJshow

LOVE this next song. Beautiful lyrics!
    11th Song - Brad Paisley - Ain't Nothin' Like #TheMJshow

Of all the songs on this album though, the next one here, is my favourite. You can't help but smile when you hear this.
If you're in love...you'll love this a lot more. If you're not, you'll wish you were just to have...little moments like the ones he sings about.
    12th Song - Brad Paisley - Little Moments #TheMJshow

I'm assuming the video here isn't the original one...but it's perfect!
No one writes sad songs like country singers. What a song!
13th Song - Brad Paisley - Somebody Knows You Now #TheMJshow

The incredible Alison Kraus joined Brad on this beautiful song. Stunning song!
The song reached a peak of #3 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks (now Hot Country Songs) charts, and #41 on the Billboard Hot 100. It won the Country Music Association's 2005 award for Song of the Year.
    14th Song - Brad Paisley & Alison Krauss - Whiskey Lullaby #TheMJshow

    Album #4 - Time Well Wasted (2005)
It was the Country Music Association's Album of the Year for 2006 and it produced the singles "Alcohol", "When I Get Where I'm Going", "The World", and "She's Everything". "Alcohol" was a #4 hit on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts, while the other three singles were all Number Ones.

    15th Song -Brad Paisley - Alcohol #TheMJshow

The stunning Dolly Parton joins Brad on this beautiful song. Check it out...
    16th Song - Brad Paisley & Dolly Parton - When I Get Where I'm Going #TheMJshow

Check out the lyrics on this one. Brilliant! One of my favourite songs on this album! This one's for my beautiful fiancée - Neha :)
"To the world you may be just another girl,
But to me, baby you are the world" :)
    17th Song - Brad Paisley - The World #TheMJshow

Actually so is this one and the next one too :) I think this was one of the first songs I played for Neha :) It's because she loves making me wait...but listen to this song and you'll see why it's all right :)
    18th Song - Brad Paisley - Waiting On A Woman #TheMJshow

Incidentally, all of the original videos for Brad's songs don't have embedding allowed which is why I've chosen to give you these versions of the songs.
I would however really recommend you see the original video of this song. It's incredible!

Okay, now this is just the perfect song for anyone in love :) Okay what the heck...this one also goes out for all you other guys. You can dedicate it to the girl you love :)
    19th Song - Brad Paisley - She's Everything #TheMJshow

(Neha...this one was for you too ;)

    Album #5 - Brad Paisley Christmas (2006)
His first album of Christmas music, it features a mix of traditional Christmas songs and newly-written songs. The track "Born on Christmas Day" was written by Paisley when he was thirteen years old, and the recording features elements from a recording Paisley made of the song in 1985.

Check out this next one. He does this in all his albums :)
He's got this skit kind of thing that goes on and it's super funny. Check it out...
20th Song - Brad Paisley - Kung Pao Buckaroo Holiday #TheMJshow

"The Kung Pao Buckaroos" are Bill Anderson, George Jones and "Little" Jimmy Dickens :)

21st Song - Brad Paisley - Born On Christmas Day

    Album #6 - 5th Gear (2007)
Here's another platinum certified album by Brad. The album's first four singles — "Ticks", "Online", "Letter to Me", and "I'm Still a Guy" — all reached Number One on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts.

This is one of my FAVOURITE fun country songs. Check it out!

Bonus Song - Brad Paisley - Online #TheMJshow

Another incredible song coming your way. Love the writing on this song.
Imagine writing a letter to yourself and sending it back in time to when you were 17. What would you say in it to the man/woman you were back then/
That's what this song talks about. Beautifully written. Absolutely beautiful!
24th Song - Brad Paisley - Letter To Me #TheMJshow

Another one of those interestingly funny songs that Brad's written. Man! How good is this guy!? :)
    25th Song - Brad Paisley - I'm Still A Guy #TheMJshow

Another song to feature The Kung Pao Buckaroos! :) hehe :)
26th Song - Brad Paisley - Bigger Fish To Fry #TheMJshow

    Album #7 - Play (2008)
The album is largely instrumental in nature, except for five vocal tracks. One of these tracks, "Start a Band" (a duet with Keith Urban), has been released as a single and has become Paisley's ninth consecutive Number One country hit, and his thirteenth overall.

    27th Song - Brad Paisley & Keith Urban - Start A Band #TheMJshow

    33rd Song - Brad Paisley - Everybody's Here #TheMJshow

The next song I have for you is Brad's favourite song on this album. I'm sure it's going to be just one of the many many hits that he's going to give us in the years to come!
34th Song - Brad Paisley - Welcome To The Future #TheMJshow

That about covers his discography till now. 8 brilliant albums.
But wait...I've got more for you.

You know how I love John Mayer :) Apparently, so does Brad!
They jammed together on a show called "CMT Crossroads" and I want to give you a song or two from there. Actually, I'm going to give you four!

First up, here are the two guitar heros doing one of Brad's songs. Love the way John sings this one. Absolutely brilliant!
Bonus Song - Brad Paisley & John Mayer - Little Moments

And now, check out John and Brad taking on one of my favourite Clapton songs.
Bonus Song - Brad Paisley & John Mayer - Old Love #TheMJshow

One of my favourite John Mayer blues ballads is coming up next. Check out Brad on this.
Bonus Song - John Mayer & Brad Paisley - Come Back To Bed #TheMJshow

This song, coming up next, is honestly in my opinion, the finest version of "Daughters" that I've ever heard...and it's all because of Brad Paisley.
Look at John standing beside him watching him sing. If I could read his mind I'd say he was probably thinking "Damn! This is how the song should be done!" :)
Bonus Song - John Mayer & Brad Paisley - Daughters #TheMJshow

And that my friends is all the show I have for you tonight :)
I hope that if you weren't a country music fan before this, you're willing to give it a shot now.
There's great music in every genre...and there's a LOT of great music in Country. :)

Right then...it's time for me to say...take care and have a nice day!

The MJ Show #35 (Guests Series - Ehsaan Noorani's Top 10 Songs)

    Man! This is really exciting!!!

I have for you one of the finest musicians of India in today's show. He is a brilliant guitarist, a part of one of India's hottest Bollywood music-making trios and genuinely one of the nicest and humblest guys I've had the pleasure of meeting in the few years that I've been in this music scene.

He loves playing the blues and to the best of my knowledge he also has another band (other than the obvious BIG one) where he plays the blues. :)

I know you read it in the heading of the show so I can't be all radio-like and unveil him and make it a big surprise...but yeah...today, I have the awesome, incredibly talented and super cool Ehsaan Noorani's TOP 10 songs for you!! :D

So let's get straight into it!

1st Song - Pink Floyd - Us And Them #TheMJshow
Ehsaan Noorani: Even now when I hear this song right from the organ swirl in the beginning it makes my hair stand and I get transported into that world of Dark Side Of The Moon and it affects me the same way as when I first heard the album.
Mihir Joshi: I know what you mean. The whole album is such an incredible experience. I think it was Dark Side Of The Moon that first got me hooked on to Floyd...more than any other album. Love Us And Them. What a great way to kick off the show. Here we go!

For those of you who missed it...go check out my two Floyd Specials after you've gone through tonight's show. You can see them here:
The MJ Show #25 (Pink Floyd Special Part 1 - David Gilmour in Concert)
The MJ Show #26 (Pink Floyd Special Part 2 - Complete Discography!)

    2nd Song - John Lennon - Imagine #TheMJshow
EN: What do I say about this song! I think schools should teach this song as part of the syllabus or whatever for the message that it has to convey.
    MJ: 'Nuff said! :)

I have GOT to give you a bonus song right now. Ehsaan this one is specially dedicated for you :)
Hope you love it as much as I do. Check it out!
Bonus Song - Eva Cassidy - Imagine #TheMJshow

3rd Song - Paul McCartney & Wings - Let Me Roll It #TheMJshow
EN: From The Wings album called "Band On The Run", this one's like a totally different rock ballad with its 6 / 8 groove and awesome guitar riff. I have loved this song since I first heard it long ago!!!!
MJ: Here's a fab live version of the song!

4th Song - The Beatles - Here Comes The Sun #TheMJshow
EN: This one's from the brilliant Abbey Road album by The Beatles. A friend of mine played this song on the guitar in school and I so loved the opening guitar part that I wanted to learn it too and play guitar!!!!
MJ: That's cool. So this song kinda got your started on the guitar eh! Wow! Really cool.
Here it is. Incidentally, I've noticed that some of my favourite Beatles songs are songs that have been written by George Harrison...just like this one. My #1 Beatles song is Something and to round off my top three I have "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", all Harrison Songs!
Of course I do love a lot of the Lennon-McCartney songs too...but there's something about the songs that Harrison wrote that just really hits home. :)
Here it is...the incredible...Here Comes The Sun!
Check out this video I have for you. Try to spot all the BIG BIG stars in the video...and tell me who you see in the comments :)

5th Song - Deep Purple - Smoke On The Water #TheMJshow
EN: The monster rock song which made any novice guitarist a guitar hero when he learned the opening bars (including me). :)
Interestingly it was only when I saw the making of Machine Head DVD did I realise that I and many other guitar players were playing the opening riff the wrong way. :)
    MJ: Man! :) That's something :)
Let's see what you're talking about. Here it is...another one of India's official Rock Anthems!
First up...see what Ehsaan is talking about:

And now...are you ready!! Here we go boys and girls! Rock out with your...well fuck it! Just rock out!!

6th Song - Tears For Fears - Woman in Chains #TheMJshow
EN: This Tears For Fears is a song where the band is at it's zenith. This is where they were experimenting with progressive pop writing and awesome production
The album, "The Seeds Of Love" is and will always be a favorite of mine.
MJ: For those who may want to know about this song...
"Woman in Chains" was released as the second single from a 1989 album called "The Seeds Of Love" by British band Tears For Fears. The single reached the Top 40 in the UK, US, Australia, Ireland, Italy and New Zealand, and was a Top 20 hit in France and in the Netherlands. The studio cut features Phil Collins on drums, and is also notable for guest vocals from female singer Oleta Adams who would later go on to achieve a successful solo career.
Have a look at a live version of the song:

7th Song - Kuch Dil Ne Kaha #TheMJshow
EN: Composed by the late Hemant Kumar, this is one song which I have heard when I was a child and its melody has haunted me ever since. It is Asha Bhonsle's finest singing and in the Bhim Palasi Raag which is one of my favorites always.
MJ: Thank you so very much for this song Ehsaan. Brilliant. I'm listening to it right now and it's such a brilliant song!
Hope you all enjoy it too. Here it is, a song from Anupama,a 1966 Hindi film, directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee.
The movie starred Dharmendra, Sharmila Tagore, Shashikala, Deven Verma and Durga Khote. The music was like Ehsaan told you was by the great Hemant Kumar.

8th Song - The Police - Wrapped Around Your Finger #TheMJshow
EN: This song is one of Sting's finest compositions always and Synchronicity, the album on which this song was featured is truly a fine album. The entire song with it's world music kind of sound contains an ambiance which engulfs you as does Sting's wonderful lyrics and singing.
MJ: Sting has always had that magic in his music and his songs. Be it his time with The Police or his phenomenal solo career. Lovely song this. Here we go...

    9th Song - Johnny Winters - It's My Own Fault #TheMJshow
EN: This song from Johnny Winters And Live album is a blues standard and it was when I heard this song that I got turned on to the blues and wanted to play the blues. Johnny Winter has been a great influence since then!!!
MJ: Here's a wee bit o' history courtesy our good friends wikipedia :)
Johhny Winter caught his biggest break in December 1968, when Mike Bloomfield, well-established as one of the best blues guitarists in the United States, who admired his playing, invited him to sing and play a song during a "Super Session" jam concert Bloomfield and Al Kooper were to perform at the Fillmore East in New York. As it happened, representatives of Columbia Records (which had released the Bloomfield-Kooper Super Session jam album to surprising Top Ten chart success) were at the concert. Winter played and sang B.B. King's "It's My Own Fault" to loud applause and, within a few days, was signed to what was then the largest advance in the history of the recording industry---$600,000.

And here's me bonus song for you laddies and lasses. The KING of the Blues...doing the song...just like he does em.
    Bonus Song - B.B.King - It's My Own Fault #TheMJshow

And holy shit! Here's another bonus song! Check it out!
    Bonus Song - B.B King & Jimi Hendrix - It's My Own Fault #TheMJshow

10th Song - John Mayer - The Heart Of Life #TheMJshow
EN: This song shows John's strong Eric Clapton influences and I just loved it the moment I heard it and of course John's guitar playing is awesome and he keeps it so subtle he is a guitar hero with true subtlety :)
MJ: I don't even want to get into how much I love John Mayer :) I've already had two shows on his music and I'm pretty sure I'll have more in the weeks to come.
For now...let's just listen to someone I consider one of the finest songwriters and guitar players of this generation.
Here is Mr.John Mayer with a live version of The Heart Of Life, a song from his brilliant album Continuum.

After Continuum was released I had the opportunity to interview him for my online music magazine eMUSICPOST.com which is incidentally in the process of making a comeback as well. I'll tell you more about that soon!
For now if you want to see that interview you can see it here:
    John Mayer interview on eMUSICPOST.com
And two of the earlier shows featuring him are:
The MJ Show #27 (John Mayer - Battle Studies)
The MJ Show #9 (Best covers by John Mayer)

That's about it boys and girls. That's all the show I have for you tonight.
Do let me and Ehsaan know what you felt about his song choice in the comments here.
And if you're not already following the man on twitter...do so now!!
