The MJ Show #121 - Pumped Up Kicks

Today's show is just about ONE song!
I'll tell you why.
Recently I was hanging out with some friends and I was shown this video:

It blew my mind in so many ways that I can't begin to describe it. The dancer in the video - Marquese Scott is unbelievable. It's difficult to imagine that someone can move like that isn't it? But this man does it.
So yeah...once my blown up mind returned to normalcy, the first thing that I thought was...what's that song?
And that search led me to a indie Amercian band called "Foster The People".
Pumped Up Kicks was the debut single by the band and it became their breakthrough hit. The single was released in 2010 and was one of the most popular songs in America in 2011.
Despite sounding like a fun uptempo song, the song is actually about a young man's homicidal thoughts about going on a killing spree. (Check out the lyrics below and you'll see what I mean.)
The song was written by the frontman of the band - Mark Foster. He wanted to write a song to bring about awareness about the issue of gun violence among the youth of America. I think it's a really awesome song...lyrically and musically.

Here are some interesting facts about the song:
The track received considerable attention after it was posted online in 2010 as a free download, and it helped the group garner a multi-album record deal with Columbia Records imprint Startime International before they had issued a commercial release. The song became both a crossover hit and a sleeper hit in 2011, as it received significant airplay on modern rock and contemporary hit radio stations. The song spent eight consecutive weeks at number three on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the United States, making it the first Billboard Alternative Songs number-one single to crack the U.S. top 5 since Kings of Leon's "Use Somebody" in 2009. The song was widely praised by critics, and it has been licensed for use in a wide range of popular media since its release. "Pumped Up Kicks" received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.

So here it is...the original by Foster The People:

Here are the lyrics of the song for anyone who's interested.

Robert's got a quick hand.
He'll look around the room,
he won't tell you his plan.
He's got a rolled cigarette,
hanging out his mouth
he's a cowboy kid.

Yeah he found a six-shooter gun.
In his dad's closet hidden in a box of fun things,
and I don't even know what.
But he's coming for you,
yeah he's coming for you.

[Chorus x2:]
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You'd better run, better run, outrun my gun
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You'd better run, better run, faster than my bullet

Daddy works a long day.
He'll be coming home late,
yeah he's coming home late.
And he's bringing me a surprise.
'Cause dinner's in the kitchen and it's packed in ice.

I've waited for a long time.
Yeah the sleight of my hand
is now a quick pull trigger,
I reason with my cigarette,
And say your hair's on fire,
you must have lost your wits, yeah.

[Chorus x2:]
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You'd better run, better run, outrun my gun
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You'd better run, better run, faster than my bullet

[Whistling]

[Chorus x3:]
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You'd better run, better run, outrun my gun
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You'd better run, better run, faster than my bullet
