The MJ Show #47 (Eagles)

It's been a while since I took on an artist special. Tonight, I want to take you through the discography of one of my favourite bands of all time. A band that has had some incredible songs and big hits.
They have been around since 1972 and have released 7 studio albums since then. Doesn't seem like a lot of output, and that is actually something I like about them. They released 7 albums but they were consistent with their music and had absolutely stunning material every time they released something new! They also had two live albums and I truly think that you get them at their best when you see them play live.

The band comprises of some absolutely phenomenal musicians and songwriters and it is no surprise that they've had songs that will last the test of time. "Hotel California" alone will probably stay a fan favourite for ever and ever!
What I want to do however in this show tonight, is, to show you that the Eagles are a LOT more than Hotel California. If you're a fan you know just what I'm talking about. If you're one of the few lucky people who've heard nothing other than Hotel California...you are in for a treat!
Because if you thought, that was a good song, wait till you see what I've in store for you tonight!

So...are you ready!! Here we go...with the EAGLES!

The Eagles are: Glenn Frey, Don Henley, Joe Walsh and Timothy B. Schmit.
Former members include Don Felder, Randy Meisner and Bernie Leadon.

1972 - Eagles
Their debut album was released in 1972 and it was a breakthrough success, yielding three Top 40 singles for them.

The first single and lead track, "Take It Easy", was a song written by Glenn Frey and his neighbor and fellow country-folk rocker Jackson Browne. Browne had written the first and third verses, and the chorus, but his work on the song had stalled. After giving Frey permission to work on it, Frey added the second verse. The song reached #12 on the Billboard Hot 100 and propelled the Eagles to stardom.

The single was followed by the bluesy "Witchy Woman" which charted at the #9 spot.

This was followed by the soft country rock ballad "Peaceful Easy Feeling" which charted at #22.

1973 - Desperado
Their second album was a concept album of sorts and was themed on Old West Outlaws.
It was during the recording sessions of Desperado that Don Henley and Glenn Frey began writing with each other, co-writing 8 of the album's 11 songs, including two of the group's most popular songs: "Tequila Sunrise" and "Desperado".

1974 - On The Border
For their next album, On the Border, Henley and Frey wanted the band to break away from the country music style they were known for, moving more towards hard rock.
Don Felder was brought in by their album producer Bill Szymczyk to add slide guitar to a song called "Good Day In Hell," and the band was so impressed that two days later they invited Felder to become the fifth Eagle. He appeared on only one other song on the album, the uptempo breakup song "Already Gone," where he performed the guitar duet with Glenn Frey. On the Border yielded a No. 1 Billboard single ("Best of My Love"), which hit the top of the charts on March 1, 1975, becoming the Eagles' first of five chart toppers.

Now, one of my favourite songs on this album is a song called "Best Of My Love" and for some inexplicable reason, I just couldn't find a youtube video for the song sung by them. Here's the next best thing I could get :)
Another one of my favourite singers gives us his take on that Eagles classic!
12th Song - Rod Stewart - Best of My Love #TheMJshow

Okay here's the best video I could get:

1975 - One Of These Nights
Their next album, One of These Nights, further displayed the growing strength of the Henley/Frey songwriting team, particularly on the album's title track and the Grammy Award winning "Lyin' Eyes". "One of These Nights" hit #1 on the Billboard chart on August 2, 1975.
The album also contains the Leadon instrumental "Journey of the Sorcerer," which is known to many as the theme to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

Bonus Track - The Eagles - Journey of the Sorcerer (Instrumental) #TheMJshow

By this time, conflict within the band had escalated. Recording and touring created stress; tempers were boiling over, and egos were clashing. Between the release of One of These Nights and the supporting tour, Bernie Leadon left the group, disillusioned with the direction the band's music was taking. Leadon left the band in December 1975, famously announcing his resignation by pouring a beer over Frey's head. In order to continue with their tour schedule, the group quickly replaced Leadon with Joe Walsh, a veteran of the James Gang and Barnstorm and a solo artist in his own right.

While all of this was happening, in early 1976, "Their Greatest Hits" (1971–1975) was released. It went on to become the best-selling album in U.S. history, selling over 29 million copies in the United States, 42 million copies worldwide to date.

Okay, here now is the opening track from the album.

Hotel California is their best-selling studio album, with over 16 million copies sold to date in the U.S.!
After the Hotel California tour, Randy Meisner left the band and moved back to his native Nebraska, where he began a solo career. The band replaced Meisner with the same musician who had succeeded him in Poco, Timothy B. Schmit.

1979 - The Long Run
In 1977, the Eagles went into a recording studio to produce their next studio album, The Long Run. The album took two years to make, and was originally intended to be a double album but the band were unable to come up with enough songs. It yielded the group's fifth and last #1 single in Billboard, "Heartache Tonight" (November 10, 1979). "Heartache Tonight" was co-written by Frey and fellow Michigan native Bob Seger.

23rd Song - Eagles - The Long Run #TheMJshow

This is my #1 Eagles song of all time! The song was written by Timothy B. Schmit, Glenn Frey, and Don Henley, and was the first Eagles song to feature Schmit (bass guitar) on lead vocals. The studio version became a Top 10 hit in April of 1980, reaching #8!

1980 - Live
The tensions in the band at the end of The Long Run were so high that the members couldn't stand to be in the same room with each other.
It appeared to be the end of the Eagles, although the band still owed Elektra a live record from the tour. Eagles Live (released in November 1980) was mixed by Frey and Henley on opposite coasts; the two decided they couldn't bear to be in the same state, let alone the same studio. The album was released with credits that listed no fewer than five attorneys and the album's liner notes simply said, "Thank you and goodnight" signaling an end of the Eagles.

Here's a song from that album that wasn't on any of their earlier albums.
"Seven Bridges Road" is the title of a song originally written by Steve Young that he recorded in 1969 for his Rock Salt & Nails album. The song became popular after the Eagles did it their way in this album.
29th Song - Eagles - Seven Bridges Road #TheMJshow

1994 - Hell Freezes Over
"For the record, we never broke up, we just took a 14-year vacation", announced Frey at their first live performance in April 1994. :)
The ensuing tour spawned a live album titled Hell Freezes Over (named for Henley's recurring statement that the group would get back together "when hell freezes over") which debuted at #1 on the Billboard album chart, and included 4 new studio songs, with "Get Over It" and "Love Will Keep Us Alive" both becoming Top 40 hits.
"The Girl from Yesterday" and "Learn To Be Still" were the other two new songs.

In 1998, the Eagles were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. For the induction ceremony, all seven Eagles members (Frey, Henley, Felder, Walsh, Schmit, Leadon and Meisner) played together for two songs, "Take It Easy" and "Hotel California".

2007 - Long Road Out of Eden
Long Road out of Eden is the seventh studio album by the Eagles and it was released in 2007. Nearly six years in production, Long Road out of Eden is the first studio album from the Eagles since 1979. The album has produced two singles for the band on the Hot Country Songs charts: a cover of J.D. Souther's "How Long", and "Busy Being Fabulous", both of which were Top 30 hits on the country charts as well as Top 20 hits on the Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks charts.

39th Song - Eagles - Hole In The World #TheMJshow

"Please Come Home for Christmas" is a Christmas song, released in 1960, by the American blues singer and pianist Charles Brown.
In 1978, the rock band Eagles covered and released the song as a single. Their version of the song peaked at #18 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts.
