The MJ Show #11 (Love Songs from Old Musicals)

I love old movies. That's not a secret. :)
One of the main reasons I love old movies is because of the music. There's nothing like a song sung that perfectly suits the mood of the moment and that actually accentuates the emotion that is being depicted in the scene. (Unlike our movies where a song most often pops up out of the blue and takes the actors to foreign countries and has 40 random people doing weird steps behind them. But lets not go into that.) :)

Here are some of my absolute favourite love songs from old movies.

1st Song - The Way You Look Tonight #TheMJshow
I know I've featured it once before, but it is one of the greatest love songs in a movie. Here's Fred Astaire singing it for Ginger Rogers in the 1936 musical "Swing Time"
The song was written by Jerome Kern with lyrics by Dorothy Fields

2nd Song -I've Grown Accustomed To Her Face #TheMJshow
I remember seeing Rex Harrison almost speaking out this song in "My Fair Lady" (1964) as he remembers Audrey Hepburn. I love the moment, the way he says it, the realization he faces...the love! It's wonderful!
The song has music by Frederick Loewe and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner.

3rd Song - They Can't Take That Away From Me #TheMJshow
Fred Astaire sings the song to Ginger Rogers in the 1937 classic "Shall We Dance". The song was written by the great George Gershwin and Ira Gershwin and what a song it is!

4th Song - For Me And My Gal #TheMJshow
Gene Kelly and Judy Garland!! What a lovely song and that Judy!! She sings so sweet! :) And ol'Gene...what a charmer eh? :) The boy sure could dance! :D
This was Gene Kelly's debut film, a film that was also called "For Me And My Gal". (1942)
Music and lyrics by George W. Meyer, Edgar Leslie and E. Ray Goetz.

5th Song - I Wanna Be Loved By You #TheMJshow
From the 1959 comedy "Some Like It Hot", directed by Billy Wilder here's a song that'll make any red blooded man melt. Marilyn Monroe croons it in her inimitable style and man...look at her...she's hot! :)
The film also featured Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis. The song was written by Herbert Stothart and Harry Ruby, with lyrics by Bert Kalmar.

6th Song - Cheek To Cheek #TheMJshow
Here's another song featuring the greatest dancing couple of Hollywood Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers! From the 1935 classic "Top Hat" here it is...a song written by Irving Berlin. Here is...Cheek To Cheek.

7th Song - You And Your Beautiful Eyes #TheMJshow
The coolest voice in the history of the musicals, that's what ol' Dino had :)
Here's Dean Martin and Polly Bergen singing this lovely song in the 1950 comedy that featured the fab team of Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis!
Lovely! :)

8th Song - True Love #TheMJshow
I have to tell you. Bing Crosby, Dean Martin, Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra and Elvis are my 5 biggest influences.
What a voice this man had! Incredible.
Watch him here with Grace Kelly. The movie was "High Society" and it starred Bing, Grace and Frank Sinatra too! The song I have for you from the film was written by Cole Porter.

9th Song - When The Girl In Your Arms Is The Girl In Your Heart #TheMJshow
Cliff Richard didn't make too many movies but the few he made had some really lovely songs...like the one I have for you here. This song was in the 1961 hit film "The Young Ones".
The song was written by the songwriting team of Sid Tepper and Roy Bennett.

10th Song - Wooden Heart #TheMJshow
Elvis! Elvis! Elvis!
The only way to end this show was with a song by Elvis.
From his 1960 film, G.I.Blues that starred him and Juilet Prowse, here's one of the most adorable love songs ever.
The song was created by Fred Wise, Ben Weisman, Kay Twomey and German bandleader Bert Kaempfert, was based on a German folk song, "Muß i' denn zum Städtele hinaus".
This one's for Neha :) This song kinda started things off didn't it? :)

That's it for tonight true believers! :)
I love these songs and I promise more standards and oldies soon...but I have a feeling that the next one's going to have something to do with rock music :)

This is your Musicman Mihir and I'll see you again soon...

Take care...and...good night!
